1860s Antique vintage 1800s Victorian CIVIL WAR era CAPE cream wool draped tassel detail with quilting wrap outerwear
The skill of Victorian seamstresses is boldly on display with this antique vintage 1860s wool and silk cape. It's structurally incredible yet so effortless! The main body of the cape is a lightweight off white wool, cut in a wide sweeping pattern. The only visible seams are on the sides, where 2 triangles of wool felt were added to enhance the sweep of the cape. The rest is one giant piece! A long cord slinks its way across the back of the neck and drapes down the front, tipped with large ornate tassels. The edges of the collar, back detail panel, and neck are delicately covered with ivory silk.
Speaking of the back detail panel, it's just crazy how beautiful it is. A large triangular free-flowing flap of wool is sewn across the back of the neck, trimmed all around with cream silk. Dead center is a large inset panel of that same cream silk, only quilted. It's larger than it appears; if you lift up the wool around it you'll see that it extends quite a bit underneath. 5 adorable cream silk bows dot the lower part of the triangle, and at the very tip is another large ornate tassel. Of course, the attention to detail is astounding. All along the edges of the hem and front are two lines of tiny white chain embroidery, entirely sewn by hand. Under the back detail panel you can see the light shoulder tailoring, totally hidden underneath the triangle flap. Single hook/eye closure at the top of the neck. It's such a statement piece and a wonderful addition to any collection! Unlined. No labels, tags, or marked size.
Excellent vintage condition, wearable. I'm astounded how strong and durable this cape is, especially the silk! There are no signs of dry rot or shattering anywhere! Even the wool is pretty much pristine; absolutely no sign of moth damage whatsoever. There is some light wear on the tassels and some scattered discolored areas, but this is commensurate with age and wear. This cape is 150 years old and it's nearly perfect, who could turn their nose up at a few faint marks and tassel pulls?
WE HAVE TWO IDENTICAL PIECES OF THIS ITEM. VERY UNUSUAL! TWINS.
